Roko Window Cleaning is named in honor of Roko Camaj — the legendary window washer of the World Trade Center, and a quiet patron saint of every person who does this work with care.
Roko Camaj was an Albanian-American window washer who immigrated to New York in 1969 and spent nearly three decades cleaning the highest panes of glass on Earth. From 1973 until 2001, he worked the upper floors of the South Tower of the World Trade Center — windows so wide and so high that no machine could reach them. They had to be done by hand. They had to be done by him.
He worked from a rig that the building's architect designed specifically for the job. He clipped his squeegee, his gloves, and every tool he carried to a tether. (The sponge, he liked to say, was the only thing that wouldn't hurt anyone if it fell.) Three times a year, for two weeks at a stretch, he and his partner would hand-wash every pane on the top floors — 1,300 feet up — and then start over.
He didn't think of himself as brave. He thought of himself as someone with a job to do. In an interview late in his life, he described the work simply: "I don't bother nobody and nobody bothers me. It's just me and the sky."
On September 11, 2001, Roko Camaj was at work on the 105th floor of the South Tower. He did not make it home. His name is inscribed on Panel S-37 of the South Pool at the National September 11 Memorial in New York.
